A proud Gitxsan community committed to preserving its culture, history, and customs for future generations
Gitxsan: Gitsegukla, also known as Skeena Crossing, means "people living under the precipice" in the Gitxsan language, referring to the sharp-pointed mountain nearby. It was historically one of the seven Gitxsan winter villages and includes Andimaul.
Treaty: The Nation is represented by the Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs Treaty Society, which is negotiating a treaty with British Columbia and Canada, currently at Stage 4 (Agreement-in-Principle).
Population: The Nation has 1,111 registered members, with 388 living on reserve, on reserve lands covering 1,930.50 hectares.
Location: The community sits where the Kitseguecla and Skeena Rivers meet along Highway 16, about 94 km northwest of Smithers and 113 km northeast of Terrace, the regional hub.
Culture: Gitsegukla maintains the Gitxsanimx language and Gitxsan traditions, with an elementary school that blends the BC curriculum with Gitxsan culture, a health centre, after-school youth programs, and community events.
